Green Sheep Project

Turning sustainability into strength

Green Sheep Project is a national initiative supporting sheep producers to better understand, measure and communicate on farm sustainability and natural capital.

GET INVOLVED: Sheep producer EOI form here

Led by Sheep Producers Australia, this Green Sheep Project is being delivered by four Natural Resource Management organisations across Australia: Glenelg Hopkins CMA (Vic), Holbrook Landcare (NSW), Southern NRM (Tas) and Wheatbelt NRM (WA); with support from a number of supply chain and sheep industry supporters.

What’s it all about?

GSP focuses on practical tools, real-world demonstrations, and clearer market recognition for environmental stewardship, recognising and valuing the sustainability work already happening on farms.

The goal of Green Sheep Project is to future-proof the Australian sheep industry by strengthening sustainability, resilience and capacity to adapt to a changing climate. Intended outcomes of the project include:

  • Improved reporting systems
  • Enhanced pasture and grazing management
  • Natural capital documentation
  • Increased data-driven decision making
  • Better integration in mixed farming systems.

The project is being delivered in a market of changing trade requirements and growing demand to verify sustainability credentials, and a variable climate with growing environmental risks. Understanding this broader context is important to shape effective engagement with the relevant regional communities that are vital to the project’s success.

These pressures are shared by the delivery partners, supporting organisations, and rural communities at large.

The Glenelg Hopkins CMA is working with local farmers to trial and demonstrate, real-world natural-capital reporting solutions for sheep farmers in south-west Victoria. Green Sheep Project aims to simplify natural capital, build confidence, and help landholders understand emerging opportunities, while recognising and valuing the sustainability work already happening on farms.

How do I get involved?

The Glenelg Hopkins CMA will trial and demonstrate practical, farmer-ready natural-capital reporting solutions for mixed farming systems in south-west Victoria.

The project will also develop pathways for farmers to receive recognition for existing environmental stewardship.

Focus:

  • Improve farmer understanding of natural capital reporting tools.
  • Develop farmer natural capital credentialing and sustainability reporting confidence.
  • Increase data literacy, skills and knowledge around sustainability.
  • Create adoption pathways through local advisors and network.

Expressions of interest are welcome now and remain open until April 2026
